Former Rep. John Adler died after heart surgery, the Courier Post reports.
Adler, 51, was hospitalized last month after a staph infection attacked the inner lining of his heart, the New Jersey newspaper reports.
Rep. Jon Runyan (R-N.J.) defeated the Cherry Hill Democrat in the November race for his southern New Jersey seat. He recently joined the law firm Greenberg Traurig.
Adler was elected to Congress in 2008 upon the retirement of longtime Rep. Jim Saxton in a district that had been a Republican stronghold. Before that, he had served in the state Senate since 1991.
