Heinrich launches N.M. Senate bid

Democratic Rep. Martin Heinrich launched his Senate bid Saturday, setting up New Mexico as the scene of one of the nation's most competitive Senate races in 2012.

He announced his decision to his supporters via Facebook and released a video titled, The Decision, which features Heinrich explaining why he's running. The highly personalized video is no bunting-and-balloons affair. Rather, it features the second-term congressman at his modest home with his wife and two sons, appearing to live a humble life that will seem familiar to many constituents.

His message to supporters notes that he "was raised in a working-class family. My father was an electrician and my mom worked in a factory."

Heinrich, who's run and won two competitive races for his Albuquerque-based seat, is a big get for Democratic Senate recruiters. Republicans already have a competitive primary shaping up between former Rep. Heather Wilson, Lt. Gov. John Sanchez and former congressional candidate Greg Sowards, who announced his run even before Democratic Sen. Jeff Bingaman announced he wouldn't seek re-election.

GOP Rep. Steve Pearce, who defeated Wilson in a 2008 Senate primary but was crushed in the general election by Tom Udall, hasn't yet announced his intentions. He greeted his delegation colleague's announcement Saturday with a tough statement noting that with Heinrich, New Mexicans "will only get someone fighting for special interests and the extreme agendas of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid."
